about vater Construction

“What we offer is a collaborative building experience. No matter how big or small the job, spending time with the client and discussing how they live and function in their home is the key to a successful project.” – Eric Vater

Vater Construction has been proudly serving the northwest Indiana community for nearly a decade. With a true love for building, the business started out with a focus on residential carpentry. Over the years, word of mouth and a strong reputation of quality craftsmanship and professionalism led the company to expand to large-scale remodeling projects and eventually, new construction homes.

In addition to being one of few construction companies in Northwest Indiana with experience in Universal Design, owners Eric and Anne Vater are among a small group of builders in the immediate area who hold both the Certified Aging-In-Place Specialists (CAPS) and Certified Green Professionals (CGP) designations through the National Association of Home Builders.

Focusing on the accessibility of homes started as a necessity. In 1999, Anne Vater became disabled as a result of a car accident. The challenges she faced living with a disability in a traditional home presented an opportunity to learn about accessible products and design features, and reveled a lack of expertise in the knowledge and execution of accessible solutions.

Both Anne & Eric earned their CAPS designations and began building a new home with all of the features to meet her current and future needs. Countless hours were spent with contractors and designers to plan and build spaces that were aesthetically pleasing and would remain functional over time. They have since streamlined this process and incorporate these attributes in all projects and designs.

Vater Construction continues to build a portfolio of plans to meet the needs of your family. Whether remodeling or building a new home, they have an exceptional team of architects and designers who can help guide you through the process and make sure that you will be happy with your home for years to come.

Universal Design + CAPS

The NAHB's Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist program was created to enable homeowners to continue to live safely and comfortably in a familiar environment as they age. To do this, many homes must be remodeled or modified to meet changing accessibility and safety needs.

In addition to CAPS, Vater Construction specializes in Universal Design, or home design with features that meet everyone's needs. Many of the hallmarks of Universal Design are common modifications in CAPS remodeling projects. These features can include one-story living without steps, wider doorways and hallways, improved lighting, walk-in showers, non-slip floors and bathtubs, rocker light switches, and more floor-space to make moving around easier.

The Vaters have been specially trained to design and build barrier-free, visually-pleasing homes. They're educated in meeting the needs of their clients, finding solutions to common design obstacles, and aging-in-place home modifications and remodeling projects. As part of their CAPS certifications, Eric and Annie also participate in community service and continuing education programs.

“Vater Construction is unique because we not only have the certifications, but also the hands-on construction experience to complete your project successfully."

Whether you're in perfect health, had an injury, or are living with a disability, the CAPS professionals at Vater Construction know how to use Universal Design to make homes accessible for everyone by eliminating barriers. Our home designs endure because they continue to meet your needs as they change, from your kids learning how to walk, to an unexpected accident, to health conditions that require mobility solutions. At Vater Construction, your family values are our values, and it's our mission to make your home livable for your entire lifetime.
